Baseball Comes Back to Win on Opening Day

The Warriors scored three runs in the eighth inning to win on Friday.

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (1-0) started he 2022 season with a 5-3 win over Tiffin (2-3) on Friday evening.  The teams are playing a four-game series at Drakes Creek Park outside of Nashville.  The Warriors' offense took a while to warm up but three runs in the eighth inning delivered an Opening Day victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A single followed by an error and a bunt single allowed Tiffin to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second inning.  The Dragons used a passed ball and an RBI groundout to score the first runs of the night and led 2-0 after two frames.  Tiffin added another run in the bottom of the third to extend its advantage to 3-0.

WSU had runners at the corners with two outs after a TU error in the top of the fourth inning.  A walk to Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) loaded the bases and Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) was hit by a pitch to put the Green & Gold on the scoreboard.  However, the Dragons would escape before the big inning and led 3-1 after 3 1/2 innings.  The Warriors loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth inning but back-to-back strikeouts thwarted the rally.

Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) led off the top of the eighth inning with a hit-by-pitch before DeLanoy laced a single into center field.  Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) came off the bench to draw a walk and load the bases.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) cleared the bases with a clutch double into left field, giving the Warriors a 4-3 advantage.

The Green & Gold kept the pressure on in the top of the ninth inning and a bases-loaded walk to Graham extended WSU's lead to 5-3.

AT THE PLATE
Maury had the big hit of the night with a three-run double, while DeLanoy had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) started and allowed three unearned runs in four and 1/3 innings with four punch outs.  Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) (1-0) collected the win by not allowing a run in three and 2/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) earned the save, tossing the final inning and working around a walk to secure the win.
