Women's Basketball Pulls Away from Davenport Late to Grab 84-61 Win

The Warriors scored 30 points in the final quarter on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (15-7 overall, 8-5 GLIAC) utilized a fourth quarter surge to pull away from visiting Davenport (3-19 overall, 1-11 GLIAC) and win 84-61 on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

WSU out-paced DU 30-16 in the games' final 10 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
A pair of lay-ups by Davenport's Lillee Gustafson and Jaci Walker put the Panthers ahead 4-2 at the 7:26 mark, but the Warriors countered with eight consecutive points to go ahead 10-4 with less than five minutes to play in the first.  DU never led again after that point, and the Green and Gold outscored the guests 6-4 in the last 4:37 of the opening stanza.  That stretch included six straight points by WSU between 4:29 and 1:43 remaining on made shots from junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.), and redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)).

Second Quarter
McArthur nailed a triple to put Wayne State in front by 10 (21-11) with 8:28 left in the new period.  After Davenport tallied the next four points, the Warriors answered with seven of the own between 7:05 and 6:02 to lead by 13 (28-15).  WSU's lead would be no more than that for the rest of the quarter.

Of the Green and Gold's 38 halftime points, redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) were responsible for 20 (10 each).  Both teams shot 50 percent or better from the floor, with DU at an even 50 percent (10-of-20) and WSU at 52 percent (16-of-31).

Third Quarter
Much like the first meeting between the two program in Grand Rapids that ended in overtime, the Warriors were unable to shake off the Panthers, who out-paced the hosts 20-16 in the third quarter.  After the opening five minutes saw Davenport narrowly outscore Wayne State 9-7, DU closed its deficit to five (47-42) following a Walker three-pointer with 2:48 remaining.  That was the conclusion of a 10-2 run for Davenport, with back-to-back triples from Walker and Jada McCree.  In the final 2:30, the Green and Gold reversed the trend with seven of the last 10 points of the stanza - including a lay-up and two foul shots from Tripp.

Fourth Quarter
Davenport closed to within six once again after an old-fashioned three-point play courtesy of Isabel Lindo, which made the score 56-50 WSU with 8:19 left.  However, that would be as close as the guests would come to the hosts.  Fugate drained a pair of three-pointers and sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) connected on a lay-up as part of an 8-0 run, which extended WSU's edge to 15 (70-55) with 5:09 remaining.

From there, the Green and Gold outscored DU 14-6, including the contest's final six points, to emerge with the 23-point triumph.  In the stretch, Lutchka had an old-fashioned three-point play, Fugate made another triple, and senior forward ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford (Pensacola State / Cleveland State)) converted on both of her shot attempts for four points.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State finished the contest going 51 percent (34-of-67) from the field, while Davenport went 22-of-45 (49 percent) from the floor.  Both teams drained seven three-pointers, with WSU doing so on 24 attempts (29 percent) and DU on 17 tries (41 percent).  The Warriors and Panthers had nearly identical marks at the foul line.  The guests made 10-of-14 (71 percent) and the hosts sank 9-of-14 (64 percent).  Wayne State had more rebounds (36-25) and assists (22-15), while out-pacing Davenport 14-1 in the steals department.  WSU had just 10 turnovers to DU's 23.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate tallied 22 points to lead all scorers, while managing five of the team's seven triples for the contest (5-of-9 3-PT).  Tripp scored 18 on 8-of-12 shooting, while Thompson nearly missed her first career double-double with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds (six offensive).  Lutchka and McArthur each had three steals to lead all players.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Ellie Toney notched a team-best 21 points to finish the game as the only Davenport player in double figures.  She went 6-of-8 from the floor (3-of-4 3-PT) and sank all six free throws.  Alexa Kolnitys and Nevaeh Williams each had four assists, while Kolnitys had the only DU steal of the contest.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Ferris State on Thursday, February 15, to meet up with the Bulldogs in Big Rapids.  Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Jim Wink Arena, and will be the first of two road games next week for WSU (Saturday, February 17, at Lake Superior State being the other).
