Volleyball Falls to Ferris State in GLIAC Semifinals

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The third-seeded Wayne State University volleyball program (20-8 overall) lost to second-seeded Ferris State (24-4) in four sets on Saturday in the GLIAC semifinals, which was hosted by Michigan Tech in Houghton.

This is the seventh time that WSU has played in the semifinals of the conference tournament.  WSU has its sights set on its first trip to the NCAA postseason since 1994 and for just the third time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) kept WSU close early in the first set with a kill to make it 4-3.  However, the Bulldogs won the next four points to take an 8-3 lead.  The Warriors trailed 14-6 and 17-7.  With FSU up 21-11, the Green & Gold won the next eight points to trim the deficit to 21-19.  Back-to-back points by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) made it 23-21 but Ferris State won the final two points to capture the first set 25-21.

The Bulldogs led the second set 5-1.  Ferris State controlled the tempo and led 20-10 and 23-12.  WSU made 23-16 on a kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) but FSU won 25-16 to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Warriors began to get into a rhythm in the third set and led 8-2 early after a kill from Kray.  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) made it 11-7 and a point by Kray kept WSU in front 14-12.  An FSU error made it 22-17 but the Bulldogs would trim the Wayne State advantage to 23-22.  The two sides traded points until the Green & Gold won 25-23 to avoid the sweep.

WSU trailed 6-3 early in the fourth set.  An ace from Wagner gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead and a point from Shell put Wayne State on top 13-11.  FSU regained the lead 16-13 and led 20-17.  The Warriors were unable to string points together and lost 25-21 and 3-1 in the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner paced the offense with 16 kills and had 13 digs.  Kray finished with 14 kills, while hitting .367.  VanderWal added 13 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) totaled 46 assists, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) posted a match-high 29 digs.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will wait and see if they make the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Monday night.
