Baseball Holds on for Win in Regular Season Finale

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (33-15) won the series finale at Lewis (19-23-1) 6-5 on Sunday powered by a five-run fourth inning. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU struck first with a run in the top of the third inning.  Jacob Badalamenti (Harrison Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) singled to start the frame and stole second base before Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 1-0 advantage with an RBI single into center field.

Four hits in the top of the fourth inning produced five runs for the Green & Gold.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the scoring with a solo home to left center.  Badalamenti drove in a run with a single and DeLanoy collected two more RBI with with a single to right field.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) finished the scoring with an RBI single to right field.

Lewis scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of a double, a walk and a passed ball.  A solo home run for the Flyers in the bottom of the sixth inning made it 6-3.


The Lewis comeback continued in the bottom of the seventh with two runs on three hits to trim their deficit to one.  The Flyers had runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth inning but Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) was able to get an inning-ending strikeout.

Cox worked around a single and a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Badalamenti had two hits and an RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (3-3) allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings to pick up his third win of the season.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) worked two innings out of the bullpen and allowed three runs before Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) worked 2/3 of an inning and did not allow a run.

Cox worked the final inning and a 1/3 scoreless and struck out three batters.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will start play at the GLIAC Tournament as the second seed in Gary, Ind. on Thursday.  WSU will meet fifth-seeded Saginaw Valley State at noon.
