Offense Leads Baseball to Third Win

CININNATI, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (3-0 overall) continued its early season schedule against Tiffin (1-3) on Friday evening and the Warriors won 13-5 to stay unbeaten in 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU scored three runs in the top of the first inning on three hits and a TU error.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the inning with a single through the left side and after back-to-back outs moved to second on a wild pitch.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) drove in the game's first run with a single to left and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) plated a pair of runs with another single through the left side.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave WSU a 4-0 lead with an RBI single to center field in the top of the second.

A triple from Kelly and an RBI double by Jorah extended the Green & Gold's advantage to 6-0.  Tiffin scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one.  The Warriors responded with two runs on two hits on the top of the eighth inning.  An infield single from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day) and a Dragons' error led to the offense.

Wayne State added five more runs to stretch lead to 13-5 on five hits in the ninth inning.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), Finkbeiner, Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) and Kelly all drove in runs during the rally.

AT THE PLATE
Foley paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, scoring three runs and had a stolen base.  Kelly drove in three runs with three hits.  Jorah drove in three runs with two hits, while Finkbeiner and DeLanoy both finished with two hits each.

ON THE MOUND
Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (1-0) started and earned the win by blanking the Dragons over six innings.  He struck out four and walked one batter.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) allowed five runs and was unable to record an out.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) worked two innings and did not allow a run.  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) tossed the a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.

UP NEXT
The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.  However, the weather forecast does not look promising and there is a plan to move the two games to Sunday.
