HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech took an early lead but fell 4-3 to Tiffin University Wednesday afternoon to open regular season play at Gates Tennis Center.

"It was a tight one today," said head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "We had some jitters in our first match of the season and I think that contributed to a slow start but overall, I felt we competed well as a team and the match could have gone either way. I'm very proud of our players and the effort they showed against a good team."

The Huskies grabbed the team doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Strong net play helped Tiffin (Carina Avram and Anaelle Lepinay) jump in front at No. 1 doubles 4-1. Grace Eland and Dominika Bobik extended points late but their comeback fell short 6-4.

At No. 2, The Huskies came from behind. Emily Cojocaru served for the set at 6-5 following a Tiffin double fault on break point. Senior Neva Manas and freshman Ewa Podulka teamed up to win 6-4 at No. 3.

Manas was first to finish at No. 4 singles with a win over Avram 7-6(5), 6-2. Bobik fell at No. 1 in two tight sets to Lepinay 7-5, 6-4. Eland and Podulka both fell in three sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively.

Emily Cojocaru tied the team match score 3-3 with a win 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5, but Lauren Opalewski came up short against Mathilde Gilles in the final match 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

The Huskies (0-1) head to Lockport, Illinois to play Lewis University Saturday, February 4 at 3 p.m. at Challenge Fitness.
