Men's Basketball Runs Out of Gas vs. Davenport

The Warriors were unable to collect two wins in two days.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-13 overall, 4-9 GLIAC) hosted Davenport (18-3 overall, 10-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors fell 84-75.  Redshirt senior Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) career-high 36 points was not enough.  The game featured 10 lead changes and nine ties.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers started quick and led 4-0 in the game's opening minutes.  Four free throws from Henderson tied the game, 6-6, at the 16:07 mark.  A fast break layup by Henderson gave the Warriors their first lead, 8-6, on the ensuing possession.  Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) hit a corner three-pointer to put WSU on top, 11-10, with 13:16 to play in the first half.  The offense went cold from the field but kept the game close at the charity stripe, and Owens-White hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 13-13 at the 10:29 mark.  Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) muscled his way to the rim to give the Green & Gold a 17-15 advantage with nine minutes to play.  Owens-White connected again from behind the arc to push the home lead to 20-17.  The game was tied at 21-21 with just under six minutes left before halftime.  Henderson finished a nifty feed from Owens-White to put Wayne State on top, 23-21, on the following possession.  DU started to heat up from deep, and back-to-back triples gave the visitors a 30-25 lead with 3:54 remaining.  Owens-White kept the game close with a trey from the top of the key, bringing WSU within two, 32-30.  A put-back slam from Henderson cut the visitors lead to 35-34 with 39 seconds left to play.  The teams went to the locker rooms with Davenport leading 38-36.

Wayne State tied the game at 40-40 on two free throws by Henderson at the 17:22 mark as both teams started the second half slow offensively.  Henderson finished a driving bucket to give the Warriors a 42-40 lead at the 16:35 mark.  At the 15-minute mark, Wayne Stat trailed 46-42.  As WSU began closing the gap, DU's Robbie Bramhill sunk a triple to push the margin to 49-45.  The Panthers held firmly onto their five-point advantage, 52-47, with 10:32 left in regulation.  A trey by DU's Chaz Birchfield pushed the deficit to seven, 56-49, at the 9:48 mark.  Henderson continued to carry the Warriors and a 10-foot jumper by the redshirt senior brought the Warriors within six, 58-52.  The Panthers led 64-54 with 7:16 to play after another triple from Bramhill.  Owens-White kept the Green & Gold within striking distance, 64-56, on his third trey of the afternoon at the 6:50 mark.  Two straight baskets from Henderson trimmed DU's lead to 66-60 with under six minutes left to play and gave Henderson a career-high 32 points.  A Murray bucket made it 71-62 in favor of the Panthers at the 4:49 mark.  Henderson shook the basket with a thunderous one-handed dunk before Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) followed a with a trey to cut the deficit to four, 71-67, with 3:42 left in the game.  However, DU regained the momentum and led 77-69 with 2:16 remaining and would go on to win 84-75.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Henderson tallied a career-best and WSU season-high 36 points on 14-of-18 shooting, while pulling down nine rebounds and blocking four shots.  Henderson accounted for nearly half of WSU's offensive output, while Owens-White finished 19 points and Davis chipped in 11.

The 36 points for Henderson matches the eighth-most in program history and is the most for a Wayne State player since Kris Krzyminski scored 38 points versus Hillsdale (Dec. 9, 2006).

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Five Panthers scored in double figures led by Bramhill's 20 points.  The others were Dyllon Hudson-Emory (15), Janeau Joubert (14), Chris Rollins (12) and Avery Hudson (12).

TEAM STATS
Both teams scored 32 points in the paint but 15 second-chance points and 20 points off of 13 WSU turnovers was too much to overcome.
