Men's Basketball Edged by Northern Michigan 75-69 in GLIAC Opener

The Warriors will look to bounce back on Saturday at Michigan Tech.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) had its four-game winning streak snapped by Northern Michigan (6-5 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) on Thursday night inside PEIF Gymnasium, 75-69.  The Wildcats now lead the all-time series 42-41 and have taken the teams' last four meetings in Marquette.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The first half was one of runs that featured two ties and nine lead changes.  Both offenses shined as Wayne State shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the field and Northern Michigan answered with a clip of 51.7 percent (15-of-29).

Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) scored the game's first bucket with a jumper and two of his 15 first-half points.  However, the Wildcats responded with a 14-4 run over the next five minutes and change for their biggest lead of the period at eight, 14-6, with 14:29 to play.

The Warriors countered with 15 of the contest's next 17 points, a run that lasted over six minutes and put them ahead by five, 21-16, at the 8:18 mark.  During that span, five different players found the scoring column for WSU and the visitors converted six of their nine field goal attempts.

From there until the final buzzer, the advantage changed sides on seven more occasions.  With that being said, the home team was able to score seven of the stanza's final nine points for a four-point halftime lead, 41-37.

Second Half
Northern Michigan carried that momentum into the second half with an 8-2 spurt in the first four minutes of the period to go up 10 on Wayne State, 49-39.  The Wildcats would lead by 10 again at 13:35 mark, 55-45, before the Warriors began to chip away at the deficit.

From that point until there was just under a minute to play, WSU outscored NMU by six, 22-16, and had clawed back to within four, 71-67.  Then, Harris notched the final two of his 22 points driving in from the right side for an easy layup to make it a two-point contest, 71-69.

Once Northern Michigan's Dylan Kuehl made a layup of his own to stretch the margin back to four (73-69), Harris came up empty on a three-point attempt before Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) committed a foul to send the Wildcats to the free throw line.  There, Brian Parzych sealed the game with two more makes, 75-69.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State finished with a 49.1 field goal percentage (27-of-55), including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from deep, and went 9-of-10 at the free throw line.  On the other side, Northern Michigan shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the floor, 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from behind the arc and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) at the charity stripe.  The Warriors committed five more personal fouls (16-11) and dished out three fewer assists (11-14).

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Williams, Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle (Macomb CC)) and Colin Golson, Jr. Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale (Siena / Eastern Michigan)) each brought down five rebounds.  Defensively, Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) tallied the team's lone block and Williams finished with a pair of steals.

LEADING THE WILDCATS
