Volleyball Begins Season with Pair of Victories

WSU swept both Montevallo and Findlay on Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (2-0) started the season with a pair of victories at the UIndy Invitational over Montevallo (1-1) and Findlay (0-2) on Friday.  WSU swept the Falcons to start the season and handled the Oilers in three sets.

MATCH ONE vs. MONTEVALLO (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

A Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) and Ella Uganski (Jenison, Mich.) block put WSU up 4-1 early in the first set.  The Falcons took an 8-6 lead later in the set and continued to lead 14-10.  Two UM errors and a point by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) gave the Green & Gold an 18-17 advantage.  A kill by Morrison made it 22-20 Warriors before the Falcons answered with a point.  Wayne State won the final three points, including a clinching kill from Shell.

Montevallo won the first five points of the second set.  However, the Warriors were able to respond and take a 9-7 lead.  WSU trailed 13-9 following a 5-0 rally by UM.  The Green & Gold answered with seven straight points.  During the rally, Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) have four straight service aces.  Kills from Shell and Morrison made it 20-15 and a block by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed the WSU advantage to 22-16.  Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) collected the final two points of the second set to give Wayne State a 25-18 victory.

An ace by Benoit gave WSU a 4-2 lead to start the third set.  The Falcons led 11-7 and 15-13.  Kills from Giroux, Shell and VanderWal put Wayne State on top 16-15.  The game was even at 21-21 before the Warriors captured the final four points to win the set and complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal finished with 13 kills, while Morrison tallied 12 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 36 assists, while Benoit surpassed 1,000 career digs with 24 digs in the season-opening victory.

As a team, WSU hit .318 compared to UM's .127 hitting percentage.

MATCH TWO vs. FINDLAY (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Findlay led the opening set 4-2 before Wayne State responded by winning the next three points, capped by an ace by VanderWal.  The Oilers led 9-8 and a point by VanderWal tied the set at 11-11.  UF continued to play tough and led 15-13 and 16-15.  The Green & Gold won the next five points, including a pair of spikes by Shell, to go on top 20-16.  A combo block by Duffield and Shell extended the WSU lead to 22-17 and the Warriors would go on to win 25-21 on a point by VanderWal.

Kills from Giroux and Shell gave WSU a 5-3 advantage to open the second set.  Findlay tied the set at 9-9 before the Warriors took the next three points, highlighted by a kill by Uganski.  A service ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) gave the Green & Gold a 17-13 lead.  Wayne State was the first team to 20 following a point from Uganski and a kill by Morrison stretched WSU's lead to 23-18.  Back-to-back points from Shell sealed a 25-21 set-two win.

The Oilers led 3-1 to begin the third set but Wayne State would go on a 7-0 run to take an 8-3 lead.  The teams traded points until a kill by VanderWal made it 11-7.  WSU held onto a 14-9 advantage and then two straight aces by VanderWal pushed the home lead to 17-11.  Wayne State was leading 20-13 and would cruise to a 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal hit .500 and finished with a match-high 18 kills, while Duffield dished out 28 helpers.

WSU's defense totaled nine blocks.

UP NEXT
WSU will have a quick turnaround and be back on the court at 10:00 AM on Saturday versus Anderson and then will finish the tournament against McKendree at 2:00 PM.
