Zarycki Drops 30 to Conquer Warriors

DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team faced off against the Warriors of Wayne State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference matchup on Saturday, January 28th.

Kaitlyn Zarycki had the hot hand once again for the Cardinals posting her second, 30-point game of the season. Zarycki shot a perfect 10 for 10 from the charity stripe and 71 percent from the field. Saniaa Walker was also perfect from the line. Seniors, Tyler Scheid and Tori DePerry contributed heavily on the defensive end of the floor with three blocks and seven rebounds respectively.

The game started with an early 5-0 run for the Warriors but the Cardinals would come back and take the lead on an Emma Dziezgowski three-point bucket. Saginaw Valley State would hold the lead into the second quarter by four thanks to two quick layups by Zarycki and a jumper from beyond the arc by Rachel Rustad. The Cardinals used a 9-2 run to start the second to extend their lead to 37-29 at halftime.

SVSU took the helm in the second half and lead for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals fended off any chance of a comeback from Wayne State who never got within six points after the break. SVSU shot 54.5 percent as a team and also lead the warriors in rebounding 34-26. The Cardinals dominated in the paint outscoring Wayne State by 16 points and were able to capitalize on second-chance points as well with a total of seven to the Warriors three.
