Women's Tennis Wins 6-1 Over Walsh

The Warriors won their season-opening match against the Cavaliers on Tuesday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (1-0 overall) posted a 6-1 victory over Walsh University (2-3 overall) on Tuesday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

NOTE:  This became the official season-opening match for the Warriors on March 29, when the previous contest vs. Lawrence Tech was deemed an exhibition.

Wayne State officially started its defense of the GLIAC Tournament title with the triumph, which it has won in back-to-back seasons.

WSU played its first contest of the season against a fellow Division II opponent, as well as regional rival, in the Cavaliers.  Walsh is a former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member that currently plays in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

DOUBLES
The Warriors notched two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the afternoon.

The nation's No. 3-ranked doubles team and top tandem in the Midwest Region, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland), secured a 6-2 win at the first flight against Aleksandra Chmir and Olesia Ivashchuk.

Over at the No. 2 spot, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and teammate Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) faced Carla Padberg and Yasmina Mayer.  The two Warriors handled their Walsh foes via a 6-3 victory.  For Beaulieu, it was her first collegiate doubles victory.

At the No. 3 position, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) fell 6-2 to Isabella Sanchez and Rachel Kibler, but the Warriors clinched the point with the first two scores.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold registered wins at five of the six singles positions to wrap-up the contest with a 6-1 triumph.

Ruyssen, ranked No. 48 nationally and seventh regionally, dispatched Mayer 6-1, 6-3 at the top flight.

Komar handled Chmir with matching set scores of 6-4 to earn the win at the No. 2 position.  She is the No. 16-ranked singles player within the talented Midwest Region.

Another nationally-ranked Warrior in Arafat also won on Tuesday from the third spot.  She shut out Padberg 6-0 in the opening set, before tallying a 6-2 win in the second.  Arafat is the 31st-ranked player in Division II via the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while also fourth in the region.

Szpakowska nearly shut out Ivashchuk at the No. 4 spot, with both sets ending 6-1.

The final victory of the afternoon went to the freshman Beaulieu at the fifth flight.  The newcomer won against Sanchez 6-4, 6-2 for her first singles victory of her collegiate career after achieving the same feat earlier in doubles.

Obedencio battled Walsh's Chiara Wolff at the No. 6 spot, but the Cavaliers' player triumphed 6-2, 6-0 against the freshman from the Green and Gold.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next play this weekend for its first road trip of the season.  The voyage will be no easy task as the Warriors will face two nationally-ranked opponents inside the UIndy Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind.  WSU will first duel with #15-Washburn on Saturday, February 10, for a neutral site match at 4 p.m.  The Warriors will then renew acquaintances with the host Greyhounds of Indianapolis on Sunday, February 11, at 11 a.m.  UIndy is ranked 12th in the nation via the ITA.
