UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team lost to Southern Indiana University on Saturday 65-64 from James E. O'Neill Jr Arena. The Cardinals dropped their first game of the season and move their record to 4-1 overall.

How it happened:

• After the Eagles scored the first five points of the game, Kaitlyn Zarycki converted on a layup for the Cardinals first points of the afternoon.
• The first quarter was tight throughout, as Southern Indiana led 15-13 after one.
• Maddie Barrie opened the second quarter with a 3-point basket.
• SVSU opened up a six point lead on 3-pointers by Barrie and Maddie Maloney, however the Eagles responded with an 8-0 run of their own, and took a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
• Southern Indiana took a seven point lead in the third quarter, but Maloney cut it to four points when she hit a 3-point basket, USI was able to hold on to the lead though, and led 53-47 heading into the final quarter. 
• SVSU got to within one point with 5:08 left after a made layup by Zarycki. The Eagles responded by going up six with 2:28 left.
• The Cardinals hung tough, as Maloney made a three, and Kyndall Spires delivered a layup with 33 seconds left to make it 65-64 Eagles. After a missed layup by USI, the Cardinals had a chance with seven seconds remaining, but were unable to convert after Southern Indiana forced a turnover with one second remaining, holding on for the victory. 

Inside the Box Score:

• Zarycki led SVSU with 14 points on 7-15 shooting. Tyler Scheid also had 14 points on 4-4 shooting, 1-1 from 3-point range, and 5-6 from the free throw line. 
• Maloney had 13 points on 5-8 shooting and 3-6 from deep.
• Barrie also scored double figures for the Cardinals with 11 points on 4-13 shooting and 3-9 from deep.
• SVSU went 23-51 from the field, 7-22 from 3-point range, and 11-15 from the line, the Eagles were 24-61 from the field, 7-18 from deep, and 10-14 from the free throw line.
• Meredith Raley led Southern Indiana with 18 points off the bench.
