Laker Women's Tennis Fall to Pride Despite Cote and Parodi Defeating Ranked Opponents

PARK FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis program (1-9, 0-2 GLIAC) fell to the Purdue Northwest Pride (7-6, 2-0 GLIAC) by a final score of 6-1 on Friday.

The Pride were able to strike first in three hotly-contested doubles matches after taking the No. 2 spot over Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) and Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles) by a score of 6-4, but the Lakers answered back as the duo of Marilou Cote (Levis, Quebec) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) were able to take down the No. 48 ranked doubles team in the country in the Pride's Sienna Lopez and Aami Reddy with a 6-4 win of their own in the top doubles match. However, despite a strong effort from Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) and Riley Gilman (Holt, Mich.), Purdue Northwest was able to come away with a hard-fought 7-5 victory in the No. 3 doubles match to secure the doubles point and the early advantage in the match.

Cote would continue her strong outing by defeating Lopez, who entered the day as the No. 73 ranked singles player in the nation in the latest ITA Division II rankings, at the top singles position. However, the Pride were able to come out on top in the remaining five singles matches, including fending off an impressive performance from Fraile in a super-tiebreaker that was played in lieu of a full third set.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 25 when they take on the Davenport Panthers with the first serve scheduled for 9 a.m.
