Decatur, Ala. -- Wayne State University's final game of the 2011 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville pitted two top-20 teams against each other as the Warriors entered the weekend sixth in the latest NFCA poll, while the Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello were 19th.
The Warriors kept battling back after letting a 1-0 lead disappear but ran out of time in a
7-6 loss.
Junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off the contest with a ground-rule double. Junior infielder
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) drew a one-out walk. After a fielder's choice, Allen scored on a wild pitch.
The Cotton Blossoms tallied four runs in the bottom of the first inning on six hits and a WSU error.
UAM tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third on a leadoff walk and a two-run home run.
Wayne State cut the deficit to three (6-3) with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Sophomore catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) had a one-out single to left center and advanced to second on a single to center by sophomore outfielder
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston). Junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) drove in a run with an RBI single to right with two outs and freshman
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) followed with an RBI single up the middle. With runners on the corners and two outs, WSU leadoff hitter Allen ended the frame with a ground out to the circle.
Arkansas-Monticello added an insurance run in the fourth, which proved to be the difference in the game, on a walk, a ground out and a triple.
The Warriors pulled within a run (7-6) with a three-run sixth inning. Freshman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) had a one-out single to center and Histed reached on a throwing error. After a passed ball, Fulton scored on a strikeout wild pitch to Burnard. Allen added an RBI single scoring Histed, and following a strikeout, junior
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) contributed an RBI single plating Burnard. For the second time in the game, WSU had runners on the corners with two outs, but a fly out by
Rebecca Ryan ended the inning.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, Wayne State threatened in the top of the seventh. Omelanchuk was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Foreman. But a strikeout and a ground out ended the game.
With her three-hit affair, Allen extended her hitting streak to three games. The Warriors had a season-high 10 hits, but were just 5-for-20 with runners on base.
Stanley reached base three times in the contest with two hits and a walk.
Junior pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) fell to 0-4 after allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits in six innings. She struck out four and walked two.
Two pitchers for UAM combined to strikeout four and walk one, while allowing six runs (three earned).
The Warriors will be idle until beginning play in the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday, March 12.
