Women's Basketball Notches 73-62 Triumph at Malone for First Regular Season Win

Shea Tripp and McKenna Ferguson combined for 38 of the squad's 73 points in the victory.

CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (1-1 overall) finished its back-to-back set with a 73-62 victory over Malone University (1-1 overall) inside Osborne Hall on Saturday afternoon for win No. 1 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) scored WSU's first points of the contest just under a minute in with a three-pointer following a pair of Malone free throws.  The Warriors led by as many as six (10-4 and 12-6) before the Pioneers grabbed the lead once again (15-14) after a triple from Brooklyn Troyer.  Troyer was good on another three with 1:19 left in the stanza to give MU an 18-14 edge.  Senior forward ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford (Pensacola State / Cleveland State)) scored on a jumper for the final points of the first 10 minutes.  Malone led 18-16 after the first period.

Second Quarter
The next 10 minutes saw just 16 points combined between the two squads.  Kyli Horn's driving layup were the only two points in the quarter for over five minutes.  Freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) broke the drought with a layup to cut the deficit to two (20-18).  Layups from redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and junior forward Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) put WSU ahead briefly (22-20) until Troyer knocked down another triple to regain Malone's lead into halftime.

MU held a 26-24 advantage at intermission, with Troyer responsible for 12 and all coming on made three-pointers.

Third Quarter
The scoring drought from the second stanza continued into the second half, with neither team scoring for nearly two minutes until junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) hit a triple to hand WSU a lead (27-26) they'd never relinquish.  The Green and Gold extended its advantage to 37-32 on another Tripp three-pointer, which was a part of a 13-6 run for Wayne State in the final four minutes of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
50 of the contest's 135 points were scored in the final 10 minutes.  The Warriors tallied 26 of those to the Pioneers' 24.  WSU secured a double-digit lead for the first time after Tripp garnered a pair of layups, which also put the junior over 20 points for the game.  Contributions from Tripp, Fugate, and redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)) helped Wayne State maintain its edge through the halfway point of the final frame, as the Warriors led by 13 (60-47) down the stretch.  Malone tried to mount a comeback with Horn scoring five more in the remaining 2:31, but nine would be as close as the Pioneers would come as WSU finished off a 73-62 victory.

Ferguson knocked down two free throws and added two made layups in the game's final minutes to not only help the Green and Gold hold the lead, but also to put her in double-figures in just her second collegiate contest.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, which outpaced Malone's 37 percent (19-of-52) for the game.  The Warriors were 7-of-23 from three-point range (30 percent), with the Pioneers going 8-of-19 (42 percent).  From the charity stripe, WSU knocked down 12-of-13 free throws (92 percent), while MU made 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line.  Even though Malone out-rebounded Wayne State 34-28, the Warriors made use of 13 steals and 22 Pioneer turnovers compared to just 12 TO's for WSU, which led to the Green and Gold finishing with a 26-8 lead in points off turnovers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Tripp scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while chipping in four rebounds and three steals.  Ferguson was the only other Warrior in double-figures with 15 points (5-of-7) and also added four rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot.  Sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) hauled in eight rebounds to pace the squad.

LEADING THE PIONEERS
Troyer (15 points) and Horn (13 on 2-of-7 and 8-of-9 from the free throw line) were the two Malone players in double-figures;  Troyer shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, with all four made tries coming in the first half.  Erin Kaufman recorded eight points and eight rebounds to fall just shy of a double-double.
