Men's Tennis Falls in First GLIAC Match of the Season

PARK FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team lost by a score of 5-2 at Purdue Northwest on Friday, March 19 in the team's first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match of the season at Park Forest Tennis and Fitness Club in Park Forest, Ill. Through the first three matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 0-3 overall record and an 0-1 record in conference play. 

Lake Superior State's No. 3 doubles team of Diego Penz and Seth Pinnoo were victorious over Purdue Northwest (4-3, 1-0 GLIAC) in a 6-4 win. The Lakers No. 1 doubles team of Juho Kantola and Xavier Vicent Navarro were defeated by the Pride, by a score 6-3 while LSSU's No. 2 doubles team of Krishan Taneja and Ali Sahibzada dropped their match, 6-4.

In singles play, the Lakers won two of the six matches. The Lakers No. 1 player Kantola won in three sets which included two tiebreaker wins, and No. 6 Pinnoo won in three sets, by scores of 6-7, 6-3, 10-5. 

Vicent Navarro, the Lakers No. 2 singles player, fell in two sets 6-4 and 6-3, while No. 3 Taneja lost in two sets (6-3, 6-4). No. 4  Sahibzada and No. 5 Irfan Ul Haq both dropped their matches in two sets.  

Looking Ahead

The Lakers will continue the weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, March 20 against the Davenport University Panthers at 10:00 a.m. in the Gainey Athletic Facility in Grand Rapids, Mich.
