UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Softball team hosted Parkside on Saturday afternoon in a GLIAC twinbill at the SVSU Softball Complex. The Cardinals registered their second straight sweep, defeating the Rangers by scores of 6-2 in both ends of the doubleheader on Senior Day.
Game 1
The Cardinals opened the game with five runs in the first three innings, taking a 5-0 edge. Two came in the 1st when Sarah Gersch moved across on a throwing error and Alexis Cerven scored off an Aubree Mouthaan RBI base hit. Cerven and Jackie Popko had RBI in the 2nd inning for Saginaw Valley and then a solo home run from Shelby Misiak in the 3rd made the lead five runs.
After the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning, the Cardinals added one more run to put the score at 6-2 headed to the 7th inning. That score came when Becky Corbett ripped an RBI single to plate Meagan VerVaecke.
The four run lead remained in the 7th and Saginaw Valley closed-out for the 6-2 win.
Corbett had three hits with an RBI while VerVaecke had two hits with a double. Misiak had the solo home run and Cerven and Popko each had a hit and run driven-in. Mouthaan had the other hit for Saginaw Valley.
Hannah Atwell (5-4) picked up the victory for SV, working 6.0 innings and allowing 2 runs (1 ER) on four hits. She had two strikeouts and one walk. Mikayla Alexandrou pitched the final inning, allowing zero runs or hits and striking-out one batter.
Game 2
Saginaw Valley found itself down 2-0 after 4 1/2 innings before scoring four in the bottom of the 5th frame to take a 4-2 lead. Misiak had an RBI single, as did Corbett in the inning. VerVaecke added an RBI double. Morgan Duda then pinch hit and promptly ripped an RBI single.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the 6th to put the game at its final 6-2 count. Misiak had an RBI double while the final run came when Alex Roob crossed the plate on a fielding error.
Misiak finished with two hits, a double and two RBI for Saginaw Valley. VerVaecke and Corbett each had two hits with a double and RBI as well. Duda had a hit and RBI while Mouthaan and Alicia Kolacki added a hit.
Kasey Bagelmann (3-2) picked up the win in relief after 4.0 innings of work. She allowed zero runs on two hits, striking-out four batters.
SVSU honored seniors Becky Corbett, Aubree Mouthaan, Alexis Cerven, Hannah Atwell and Elayne Young prior to the first game on Saturday.
