SVSU improves to 4-0 to start 2021 with two wins

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team picked up its second straight two-game sweep at the Dome Tournament Saturday in Rosemont, Ill.

The Cardinals topped William Jewell College 9-1 in six innings in the opener and defeated the University of Findlay 15-6 in six to move to 4-0 overall this season.

In the opener with WJC, the Cardinals got on the board early with RBI singles from Julia Salisbury and Jackie Popko in the first. SVSU extended its lead to 4-1 in the second with an RBI triple from Sarah Gersch, followed by an RBI single from Leah Denome.

Salisbury, Popko, and Sara Moos each drove home a run in the fourth, while Sabrina Sage added a two-run single in the sixth to end the game due to the run rule. SVSU racked up 14 hits, including three from Salisbury and two each from Gersch, Denome, Popko, and Sage.

Julia Mundy moved to 1-0 on the season on the mound. She started and tossed five innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking two, and striking out two. Alyssa Muench pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief.

Against Findlay, SVSU jumped out 6-0 before the Oilers rallied to cut the Cardinal advantage to one with five runs in the third. SVSU remained perfect on the season with five in the fourth and four in the sixth to end the game.

The Cardinals totaled 13 hits, capped off by a grand slam from Gersch in the sixth. Salisbury finished with another three hits, while Gersch, Denome, and Popko each added two. Kasey Bagelmann earned the win in relief to move to 1-0.

SVSU closes play at the Dome in Rosemont against Hillsdale College at 2 pm CST on Sunday.
