Women's Basketball Claims 93-68 Victory Over Purdue Northwest in Final Home Contest

Junior Nastassja Chambers joined the 1,000 point club during today's contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-12 overall, 8-9 GLIAC) topped Purdue Northwest (3-20 overall, 1-16 GLIAC), 93-68, on Senior Day at the Matthaei.

The Warrior senior starters outscored PNW 20-8 in the first 5:18, including 14 points by India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) alone.  Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) was the next to score for the Green and Gold, making back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to 13 points (24-11) at the 2:53 mark.  Over the final 1:50 of the first quarter, WSU recorded six points and the Pride tallied four points giving Wayne State a 30-15 lead after 10 minutes..

Each team scored six points in the first 2:45 of the second period.  Wayne State would drain three consecutive triples over a span of 2:39 to lead 45-26 just past the mid-point of the quarter.  Hawkins connected twice from long range with senior Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) also making a triple during the run.  Chambers and senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) each tallied two points before allowing Purdue Northwest to record the final six points of the half.  The Warriors led by 15 points (49-34) at intermission.

PNW continued its scoring spurt with four points in the first 1:44 of the second half.  Chambers and Williams both scored a basket (53-41) before a 2:19 scoring drought for both teams.  Chambers ended the scoreless streak with two free throws, followed by a shot from long distance by junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic).  WSU only allowed three free throws for the Pride in the last 2:28 of the third stanza, while scoring nine points to lead 68-46 heading into the final stanza.

Freshmen Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) each scored two points to start the final period.  Cherney tallied five points for the Green and Gold over the next 3:18, while Purdue Northwest recorded eight points.  Over the final five minutes, WSU outscored PNW 16-14, with the largest lead of 29 points at the 1:05 mark. 

WARRIOR NOTES
The five WSU seniors started in their final home contest, including Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.), Daejia Hill (Muskegon, Mich. / Orchard View), Williams, Hawkins, and Murphy.

Wayne State tallied the most first-quarter points (30) this year in its contest vs. the Pride.

The Green and Gold recorded the most first-half points (49) this season.

Hawkins surpassed her then career-high 19 points in the first half alone (22 points).

Chambers joined the 1,000 point club after her first bucket of the contest.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 47 percent (33-of-71) from the floor, while the Pride connected on 40 percent (24-of-60) of their field-goal attempts.  The Warriors went 19-of-21 (91 percent) in free throw attempts, while Purdue Northwest was 12-of-19 (63 percent) from the foul line.  Wayne State had a 47-32 edge in rebounds, while also leading 44-32 in points in the paint, 22-15 in second chance points, and 45-17 in bench points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hawkins recorded a career-best and a game-high 22 points, with Chambers (17) and Williams (16) also scoring in double digits.  Williams tallied game-high totals of nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Shae Rhonehouse recorded a team-high 18 points.  Danielle Nennig (16) and Lanie Allen (10) also scored in double digits.  Nennig snagged a team-best seven boards.

UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will travel to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 21, for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
