Big Second Game Shutout Gives Ferris State Split On Day Three In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad concluded day three action in Florida on Monday (March 9) with a split at The Spring Games in the Sunshine State.

The Bulldogs fell to Wayne State College (Neb.) by a 7-1 count in the opener before rebounding in a big way with a 6-0 shutout win over Nyack in the finale.

WSC posted three runs in the first and four more in the third to build a seven-run lead with FSU totaling its only run in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs were outhit 14-5 overall in the game.

Ali Magiera led the Bulldogs with two hits in the setback and drove in FSU's only run. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Abby Highway threw two and two-thirds of an inning with seven runs allowed, of which three were earned, on seven hits to go with a walk. Kristie Gray tossed four and one-third innings in relief and did not allow a run on seven hits while striking out two.,

In game two, Ferris State controlled play from the outset as FSU put four runs on the board in the first and added single runs in the third and seventh innings to account for the final margin. The Bulldogs held a 12-1 edge in total hits.

Both Paige Kortz and Kaitlyn Orme tallied three hits apiece while Kylie Winkels had two in the victory. Kortz also knocked in two runs for the Bulldogs and doubled in the game. Orme doubled twice and had an RBI.

Kaitlyn Nugent hurled a gem with no runs allowed on a single hit in seven innings of work. She had six strikeouts and walked none in earning the triumph.

The Bulldogs, who are now 6-8 overall this year, have tomorrow off before returning to the field with another doubleheader on Wednesday (March 11). FSU will take on regional foe Lewis (Ill.) at 10 a.m. (ET) before battling Post at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
