Men's Tennis Shuts Out Lake Superior State in Road Contest

The Warriors and Lakers played to clinch, with WSU grabbing all four points.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (12-9 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) claimed the first match of a weekend back-to-back on Friday, defeating Lake Superior State (6-6 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) 4-0 at the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Warriors and Lakers played to clinch, so the first team to four points won the overall match, with all other matches being rendered unfinished.

DOUBLES
The action at the No. 1 doubles spot set the stage for a Warriors victory.  The usual top pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) showed why they are ranked as the third-best doubles team in the nation with their 7-6 (7) win at the top flight.  The duo were able to fight for the triumph in what was the closest battle of the morning affair.

The Drenth and Grey win was the point that granted the Warriors a 1-0 edge heading into singles action.

The Green and Gold also received a win from Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) at the No. 2 position, as they topped Jordi Fraile Raton and Raul Velasco Garcia, 6-4. The two played with each other, and won, for a second consecutive match.

Wayne State was unable to emerge from doubles spotless, however, as Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) fell 6-3 at the third flight to Lluc Limongi Ollers and Xavier Vicent Navarro.

SINGLES
Since WSU won the first three completed matches of singles play, only those three contests saw a finish and a winner.

At the No. 1 singles spot, Drenth (coming off a GLIAC Player of the Week award) defeated Aaron Osmond in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) to give the No. 24-ranked player his 10th victory at the top flight this season.

Grey was also a winner at the second spot. He needed a tie-breaking victory (7-6 (3)) in the first set, but won 7-5 over Ollers in the second set for another WSU point.

Also finishing with a triumph at LSSU was Karcz over Maxence Hamon at the No. 3 spot.  He won, 6-4, 6-3.

Laws was the next closest to finish, but his match against Raton was cut short in the final set.  The redshirt junior fell in the opening set (6-4), but rallied back to win the second set (7-5) and was tied at 1-1 in the match-decider.

At the No. 5 spot, Kitayama's match barely was underway when the Warriors posted their fourth point on the scoreboard.  He was ahead by a 1-0 margin in the opening set against Navarro.

The sixth flight never saw the beginning.  Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich.) was penciled in to the spot for WSU, while Garcia was in that position for LSSU.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Michigan Tech for a match against the Huskies on Saturday.  The contest is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
