Laker Volleyball Falls to Warriors in Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team (1-13, 0-6 GLIAC) fell to the Wayne State Warriors (9-5, 3-3 GLIAC) by a score of 3-0 on Friday.

The Warriors were able to take an early lead, but kills from Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia), and Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) were able to keep the set close. However, Wayne State was able to use runs of 4-0 and 8-0 to claim the first set 25-14.

The second set started off back and forth, but back-to-back kills from Taylor Fleming (Rogers City, Mich.) initiated a 5-1 Laker run to take the lead. However, the Warriors were able to slowly come back and pull ahead, and despite multiple kills from Varnakova and a late rally that featured a kill and a block from Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.), they held on to take the second set 25-18.

The Warriors claimed an early lead in the third set, but kills from Fleming and McDaniel helped the Lakers cut the deficit to within two points. However, Wayne State responded, pulling back out ahead, and despite kills from Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Fleming, and McDaniel, the Warriors claimed the third set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they face the Davenport Panthers in Grand Rapids, Mich. with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
