Volleyball Dominates Northwood to Complete Weekend Sweep

Head coach Tim Koth wins 100th match at Wayne State.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (8-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) bested Northwood (7-2 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday in three sets.  The Warriors won by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-23.  The victory was head coach Tim Koth's 100th win at Wayne State, which ranks second all-time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
An NU error tied the first set at 5-5 before a kill from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and a block by VanderWal and Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) pushed WSU ahead 7-6.  The Warriors led 12-7 and 16-12.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore), Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) and VanderWal tallied kills as the Warriors stretched their advantage to 20-13.  An ace Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) made it 22-14 and Wayne State would go on to take the opening set 25-15.

The Green & Gold held onto a 6-1 lead after a kill from Wagner early in the second set.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) gave WSU a 10-2 lead and the margin grew to 11, 18-7, following another point by Withun.  The Warriors dominated the rest of the set and won 25-13.

Kills from VanderWal and Shell gave the WSU am 8-5 lead to start the third set.  The Timberwolves surged and took a 12-9 advantage but the visitors' lead was short-lived as the Warriors won the next three points to tie the set at 12-12.  The two sides traded punches but WSU led 19-17 after a kill by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.). Northwood tied the game at 19-19 before WSU took a 22-20 lead.  A kill by Kray brought the Warriors within one point from the sweep.  However, NU took the next two points to make it 24-23 before an attacking error by the T-Wolves gave WSU a 25-23 win and a 3-0 sweep.
