ST. PAUL, Minn. - On a night when there were nearly as many combined turnovers (52) as shots taken (55), the Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (3-2) prevailed with a 13-8 win over Missouri Western State (0-1) on Friday at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
Concordia came out on the right side of both of those team statistics, with 32 shots and 23 turnovers while MWSU had 23 shots to 29 turnovers. Concordia also secured a 14-11 edge on the draw and converted 18-19 clear attempts to MWSU's 17-22.
The Golden Bears remain at home on Sunday, closing out a four game homestand against Rockhurst (Mo.) at noon.
Four Golden Bears scored a pair of goals each led by
Molly Moynihan with three points as she added the team's lone assist on the evening. She was joined by
Maddy Seifert,
Hailey Hartlage and
Delaney Davidson with two goal games.
Hartlage had a big impact all-around, producing a game-high five caused turnovers, while tying for team-highs with four ground balls, three draw controls and five shots on goal.
The team also received a boost from freshman
Maddie Westberg who netted her first career goal while matching Hartlage and
Sarah Pierson with three draw controls in the middle.
Davidson extends her team lead with 13 goals on the year while Moynihan firms her grip on the team's point lead with 18 as she matched
Erica Peterson's seven assists. Hartlage leads the team with 10 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls on the year.
In goal, Concordia's two goalies each allowed four goals to the Griffons, with
Maddy Huebner securing the victory as she saved seven of the 11 shots on goal while facing 18 total shots on the night in just over 40 minutes of work.
Concordia led throughout the night, scoring the first three goals in the first seven and a half minutes of the game. They built a five goal margin, 7-2 early in the second half to complete their second 3-goal spurt of the game.
The CSP defense countered MWSU at every turn, only allowing the Griffons to score back-to-back goals once on the evening, an early third quarter pair of goals that cut CSP's lead to three, 7-4.
In addition to a volume of turnovers, the game featured 10 cards, with the Golden Bears only committing three. Despite the extra-player advantages, CSP had an even scoring margin with two goals a player-up with MWSU scoring twice with a player-down.
Missouri Western was led by Madison Brady's three goals in their season opener while Amani Robinson had a pair. Griffon goalie Mackenzie Porter had 13 goals allowed and 13 saves, adding six ground balls for the visitors.
