Men's Tennis Prevails, 4-3, in Battle With Rollins

The Warriors claim their third win of the season over a ranked opponent.

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The No. 13-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-7 overall) picked up a ranked victory, 4-3, over No. 19-ranked Rollins College (11-2 overall, 3-0 Sunshine State) on Tuesday afternoon at Copeland Stadium in Winter Park.

This marks the first victory for the men's tennis program over Rollins in 11 meetings (dating back to 2011).

DOUBLES
WSU registered the doubles point with some close matches that the team prevailed in.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) as well as Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and partner Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) each earned 7-5 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, respectively.

For Karcz, it was his first appearance in doubles action since February 17.  He continued his success with Kitayama, as the duo are now 5-1 in doubles while playing together.

At the No. 1 spot, the No. 5-ranked doubles pair of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) fell 6-3 to Efe Comu and Luke Quaynor.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold won three of their singles matches, enough to clinch the victory with the doubles point.

Drenth pulled out a win in straight sets at the No. 1 spot.  The sophomore topped Comu of RC in a tiebreaker (7-5) to win the first set, and won the second set by a 6-2 score.

Recording back-to-back 6-4 victories was Laws at the No. 5 spot, handling Moritz Stenzer for the third Warriors point of the match.

Perhaps no effort was bigger than the performance of Kitayama, who dropped his first set 6-4 against Mikkel Baumann.  However, the junior prevailed in a tiebreaker (7-4) to win the second set, 7-6.  The overall match effectively came down to the action in the final set at the No. 6 spot, and Kitayama won 6-4 to clinch the victory for WSU.

Grey fell in straight sets to Quaynor at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2.

Spicer put up a challenge in second set after dropping the first (6-2), but fell by a score of 8-6 in the tiebreak to lose the point.

Karcz was at his familiar No. 4 singles spot, but dropped the match to Richard Stoiberer, 6-4, 6-2.
