Volleyball Rebounds with a Saturday Sweep

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (4-4 GLIAC) swept Parkside (1-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei.  The Warriors won set one (25-16), set two (25-23) and set three (25-16).

HOW IT HAPPENED
An ace from sophomore Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) gave Wayne State an early 6-2 lead to start the first set.  Sophomore Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) made it 10-4 with a kill and the home advantage grew to 15-5 on another point from Morrison.  A block by redshirt sophomore Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and redshirt junior Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed WSU's lead to 19-9.  The Rangers would make a bit of a comeback and trail 22-16 but the Warriors won the final three points, including a set-sealing block by freshman Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian).

The second set was close early as the teams traded points.  A kill from VanderWal put the Green & Gold on top 9-8 but Parkside would tie the game at 14-14.  Points from junior Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Shell made it 16-14.  Redshirt junior Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) tied the set at 19-19 with a kill but UWP would respond to take a 21-20 lead.  The set was tied at 23-23 after a WSU error but Morrison and Wagner collected two kills to win the set 25-23.

The Warriors set the tone early in set three that Saturday would be different than Friday and led 9-3 after two kills from Wagner and another by Kray.  WSU's advantage was 15-6 and then 18-8 after UWP made three straight errors.  Following an ace by Wagner, Wayne State led 23-21 and would go on to win 25-16.  The set ended on a combo block by Shell and redshirt freshman Chloe Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal led the offensive attack with 11 kills, while Wagner had 10.  VanderWal hit an impressive .318 and Wagner posted a .250 hitting percentage.  Kray was also effective and efficient with eight kills with a .636 hitting clip.  Duffield finished with 37 assists, while Benoit had a match-high 14 digs.

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State's blocking was the key on Saturday as the Warriors recorded seven stuffs.

COACH KOTH'S THOUGHTS
