Second-half rally lifts Cardinals to 56-52 win

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball rallied in the second half for its first win of the 2020-21 season, topping Northern Michigan University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday in Marquette, Mich.

The Cardinals trailed by 10 points at the break and four at the start of the fourth, but outscored the Wildcats 18-10 in the final frame to take the opener of a two-game weekend series 56-52.

The victory pushes SVSU to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC.

Maddie Barrie led the Cardinals with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Tyler Scheid added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Tori DePerry finished with eight points off the bench.

SVSU shot 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) from the field, 4-of-16 (25 percent) from deep and 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from the line. The Cardinals finished with six assists, 10 steals and 15 turnovers, while outrebounding NMU 30-27.

The Wildcats (2-1, 2-1 GLIAC) were led by Makaylee Kuhn with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds. NMU shot 15-of-48 from the field, 8-of-22 from deep and 14-of-19 from the line.

The Cardinals and Wildcats will close the two-game series at 1 pm Sunday in Marquette, Mich.
