Laker Men's Basketball Fall to Huskies

Laker Men's Basketball Fall to Huskies

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's basketball team (8-11, 7-4 GLIAC) fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies (5-15, 2-9 GLIAC) by a final score of 76-71 on Saturday.

The Lakers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after a tough basket while being fouled from C.J. Robinson (Clarkston, Mich.), but the Huskies battled back to tie up the score at 9-9 before the under-16 media timeout. The Huskies would hit a pair of threes to pull ahead, but Robinson was there to counter with a three of his own. The Lakers would continue to battle by grinding their way to the free throw line and a pair of baskets down low from Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.), but Michigan Tech was able to hold onto a 33-26 lead going into the halftime break.

The Huskies struck first in the second half, but a three from Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) cut the lead back down to four. However, the Huskies would once again get hot from beyond the arc and go back up by double-digits. A three from Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) would steal back some of the momentum as the Lakers got back to within five, but it would not be enough as Michigan Tech was able to hold on for the victory.

Kemon Bassett (Detroit, Mich.) led the way offensively with 14 points while also leading all players in both rebounding and assists with seven of each. Meanwhile, Okerlund would join his teammate in double-digit scoring with 12 points of his own.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 2 when they travel to take on the Pride of Purdue Northwest with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Standard TIme.
