MARQUETTE, MICH. -- A fast start and excellent defense propelled the Wayne State University women's basketball program (16-6, 12-5 GLIAC) to a 61-37 wire-to-wire win at Northern Michigan (10-13, 5-11 GLIAC) on Thursday night.  WSU is looking to strengthen its postseason resume, as well secure a home GLIAC playoff game on March 2.  Wayne State was seventh in the most recent set of regional rankings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 5-0 at the 8:08 mark following a three-pointer from Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and the run reached 7-0 thanks to a layup by Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).  Sherwood kept the momentum going with a long-range jumper, making it 12-2 with 5:10 to play in the opening stanza.  Northern Michigan used an 8-0 run to trim the home deficit to two, 12-10.  Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) beat the first-quarter buzzer to make it 14-10.

NMU tied the game at 14-14 with 8:27 to play before halftime.  Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) put the Green & Gold back on top, 16-14, with a bucket at the 6:36 mark.  Four consecutive points from Sherwood gave the Warriors a 24-18 lead with 3:28 to play in the period.   Both offenses went cold towards the end of the second quarter but a triple by Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) pushed WSU in front 27-18 at the 53-second mark.  At the break, the Warriors led 29-18.

Cherney collected the first points of the second half at the 7:59 mark to make it 31-21.  George and Miller connected from deep on back-to-back trips, setting the score at 39-24 with 5:02 to play in the third quarter.  Another three-pointer from George extended WSU's lead to 42-24 at the four-minute mark.  Wayne State continued its rally with a jumper by George to put the run at 13-0.

Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) started to heat up in the fourth quarter and five points from her, including a triple gave Wayne State a 51-28 advantage with 7:44 left in the contest.  A three-point play by Moore stretched the visitors' lead to 56-29 at th 6:02 mark.  Baskets from Chenlle King (Flint, Mich. / Carman-Ainsworth) and Halle Barnett (Toledo, Ohio / Sylvania Southview) pushed WSU's lead to 61-34 with under one minute to play.  The final score would be 61-37, giving the Green & Gold its 12th league win of the season.
