Prosjanykov shines but Huskies lose 6-1 to Lakers

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Huskies showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately succumbed 6-1 to No. 39 ranked Grand Valley State in men's tennis Thursday afternoon at Gates Tennis Center.

Michigan Tech (0-13, 0-5) has one more chance to get in the win column this season Saturday when they host No. 19 Ferris State at 2 p.m.

The Huskies came within a single point of winning the team doubles point when the final match came down to No. 1. Leon Sell and Eli Pinnoo earned a break point leading 6-5 but Unai Gonzalez and Sean Miller pushed it into a tiebreak. Sell's backhand volley winner again put Tech ahead 5-4 but the Lakers won the next three points, including a return winner up the line off a wide serve on set point.

Vitor Jordao and Nikolai Prosjanykov teamed up to win 6-4 at No. 2.

Sell started singles with forward moving aggression at No. 2 and five straight games to eventually close out the first set. Sebastian Arce made adjustments to turn the tide over the final two sets for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 final score.

Unai Gonzalez injected pace from the baseline to get past Vitor Jordao at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3, but Prosjanykov picked up his second win of the afternoon at No. 3 with a straight set victory over Sean Miller by the same score.

Adam Fenjiro and Eli Pinnoo pushed the Lakers to three sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively but both came up short.

"I thought we had a good start in doubles against a difficult opponent," said head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "Unfortunately, we struggled in close singles matches and weren't able to get over the top. We will have to bring our best if we want to win on Saturday."

Grand Valley State improved to 11-7 overall, 3-2 in the GLIAC with the win.
