Laker Volleyball Falls to Ferris State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University volleyball team (1-12, 0-5 GLIAC) fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs (7-6, 5-0 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-0 on Sunday.

Both teams would trade points to open the match, but the Lakers were able to utilize an early 5-1 run that featured an Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.) service ace to take a four-point lead. The set would then go back and forth for several points but kills from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Nina White (Chelsea, Mich.) allowed the Lakers to go up by as many as six points. However, despite a pair of strong kills from Taylor Fleming (Rogers City, Mich.) the Bulldogs were able to string together multiple 4-0 runs to come back and take the first set by a score of 25-23.

The Bulldogs carried their momentum into the second set with an early 6-1 run, but the Lakers fought back, using kills from Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) and Maggie Morris (Schoolcraft, Mich.) to go on a run of their own to stay in the set and forcing a Ferris State timeout. However, the Bulldogs were able to hold on and claim the second set 25-16.

Both teams would open the third set by trading points on their way to a 4-4 stalemate, but the Lakers caught fire and utilized kills from Morris and Fleming to go on an 8-1 run and seize the momentum. However, the Bulldogs were able to use runs of 5-1 and 5-0 to come back and take a slim lead, and despite a pair of emphatic kills from Velasque, Ferris State held on to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) finished with her fifth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs, and Velasque led the team in kills with nine while also earning a pair of solo blocks defensively.

The Lakers return to action on Sept. 23 when they travel to take on the Wayne State Warriors in Detroit, Mich.).
