Women's Softball Drops Season Opener 4-2

Warriors outhit 11-6 and costly errors prove to much too overcome.

Decatur, Ala. -- The sixth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (0-1 overall) began its 2011 campaign with a 4-2 setback to the University of North Alabama Lions (1-4 overall) Friday afternoon on the first day of the 2011 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

WSU junior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) did her best Houdini act in the first two innings.  UNA loaded the bases in the top of the first on a single, walk and Warrior fielding error but a 5-2-3 double play and a foul out ended that threat.

In the top of the second after the Warriors had taken a 2-0 lead, the Lions had back-to-back singles, and following a strikeout, pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position.  Cain then settled down to record a strikeout and a fly out.

Wayne State's first inning scoring came as junior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had a leadoff single and went to second when freshman second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) was hit by a pitch.  After a fielder's choice, junior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) singled in Fulton.  Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) then scored on a wild pitch.

The Lions scored once in the third after the first two batters were retired on a single, waslk and another single.

UNA surged ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  A one-out single, was followed by an infield single plus a throwing error putting two runners in scoring position.  A wild pitch and an RBI single plated the tying and go-ahead runs.

North Alabama added an unearned run in the seventh.

Cain struck out two and walked two while allowing 11 hits and four runs (two earned) for WSU.

Allen had two of WSU's six hits.

The Warriors will play West Alabama later today.
