Errors Doom Baseball in 13-8 Loss to Minnesota State

WSU gave up a 7-3 lead in the middle innings.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- After a day off on Tuesday, the Wayne State University baseball program (11-4 overall) dropped a 13-8 slugfest to Minnesota State (8-4 overall) on Wednesday afternoon.  WSU led 7-3 after four and a 1/2 innings but MSU took advantage of five Warrior errors to complete the comeback.

It was the sixth straight game against a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as every game so far in Florida have been against a member of the NSIC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors struck early in the top of the first inning after singles from redshirt sophomore Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.), junior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and redshirt sophomore Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) led to a two-run double from sophomore Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South).  The Mavericks responded with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Sophomore Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) sent a one-out double down the left field line in the second inning and advanced to third base on a wild pitch before an RBI single by junior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill.) extended WSU's lead to 3-1.  Finkbeiner and junior Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) followed with base hits before a bases-loaded walk to Tanderys made it 4-1.  Minnesota State scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning to cut the advantage to 4-2.

MSU added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and a WSU error.  Miller connected for a clutch three-run home run to push the Green & Gold advantage to 7-3.

The Mavs tied the game at 7-7 with four runs on three hits, two walks and a Warrior error in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Sophomore Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single into center field.  The back-and-forth contest continued as MSU tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Minnesota State exploded for five runs on three hits and two WSU errors to take a 13-8 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

The Warriors started the ninth inning with a single by redshirt freshman Max Hendricks (White Lake, Mich. / Hartland) but that would all of the offense WSU could generate as it fell 13-8.

AT THE PLATE
Miller finished with three RBI, while Finkbeiner, MacLean, Graham, Badalamenti and Miller all finished with two hits a piece.

ON THE MOUND
Senior Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) lasted four innings and allowed three runs (two earned) to go with four strikeouts.

Senior Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) surrendered four unearned runs in his 2/3 of an inning, while senior Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) (0-1) was touched for two runs (one earned) in an inning and a 1/3.

Redshirt sophomore Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) worked an inning and gave up four unearned runs, while senior Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) worked a scoreless ninth inning.
