Baseball Takes Series Opener, 10-8

SVSU scored four runs in the ninth but WSU held on to win.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (18-8, 5-2 GLIAC) topped Saginaw Valley State (16-11, 7-2 GLIAC) 10-8 on Friday.  WSU scored in four of the first five innings before SVSU scored four late runs to make things interesting.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals scored first with a run on three hits in the top of the first inning.  The Green & Gold were quick to respond as a throwing error opened the door.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) doubled off the wall for the WSU's first tally of the game and an RBI groundout from Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

The visitors took a 3-2 lead with two runs on three hits and an error in the top of the third inning.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) singled to start the bottom of the third inning and then stole second base.  Back-to-back ground outs allowed WSU to tie the game at 3-3.

The back-and-forth affair continued as SVSU used a hit-by-pitch, a fielder's choice and RBI single to score a run and take a 4-3 advantage.

Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) single and a Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) hit-by-pitch preceded a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) delivered the biggest hit of the game with a two-run double into left center.

Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) made it 6-4 with an RBI single down the left field line and a two-run double by Miller extended WSU's margin to four, 8-4.

Miller added another RBI double to his stat sheet in the bottom of the seventh inning and CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) made it 10-4 with a pinch-hit RBI single into right field.

Two errors in the top of the ninth allowed the Cardinals to seize some of the momentum and it was squarely in the visiting dugout following a three-run home run from Austin Schweiger over the "Green Monster" to trim WSU's lead to 10-8.  However, the Warriors were able to collect the final two outs and hang on to win.

AT THE PLATE
Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Miller drove in three runs with his two doubles.  DeLanoy, MacLean and Tanderys all had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) allowed four runs (three earned) in four innings and struck out three batters.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season by working three innings out of the bullpen, not allowing a run.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) finished the game, allowing four unearned run in his two innings of work, with two strikeouts.
