Softball Lets Late Lead Vanish In 8-6 Setback

Stanley goes 3-for-4.

Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team fell to 0-2 on the year following an 8-6 loss to West Alabama in the second game of the opening day of the 2011 Charger Chillout hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

After allowing two runs on a hit, an error and two walks in the top of the first, the Warriors fell behind 3-0 in the third as the Tigers added a run in the third on three hits and left the bases loaded.

WSU rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third to knot the score at three.  Freshman left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a ground out.  Junior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica ) reached on an error and junior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) plated White with a single.  After a fielder's choice erased Histed, junior third baseman Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) walked and junior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) followed with a two-run single to center.

UWA regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on two singles sandwiched around a triple.

The Warriors didn't quit and responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  Stanley started the rally with a one-out single to center.  She advanced to second on a ground out, and following a walk to sophomore catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.), sophomore center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) drilled a two-run double to center field.  Two wild pitches plated Foreman with the go-ahead run.

West Alabama answered in the top of the seventh.  After a single off Warrior starter Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity), junior Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went into the circle.  Cain retired the first two batters on a ground out and strikeout, but a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases.  A bases loaded walk brought in the tying run, and the Tigers took the lead on a WSU error.  UWA's final run was scored on another walk.

Wayne State had a chance to send the game into extra innings in the bottom of the seventh.  Histed and Allen both reached on Tiger errors, and after an out, Stanley singled to right field but Allen and Histed were both on third base resulting in Allen being tagged out.

West Alabama had an 11-9 edge in hits.  Stanley led WSU with a 3-for-4 effort plus a walk.  White chipped in with two hits.  Omelanchuk tied a school record with four walks as WSU batters received eight free passes.

McLaughlin allowed six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in six innings with one strikeout and four walks.  Cain (0-2) surrendered two unearned runs in the seventh with one strikeout and three walks.
