Women's Tennis Wins 7-0 at Home Against Northwestern Ohio

The Warriors have not allowed a point to their opponents in the first three matches.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-0 overall) made it three consecutive victories to begin the spring schedule as they shut out visiting Northwestern Ohio (1-3 overall) 7-0 on Saturday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility. The Racers came into the contest receiving votes in the NAIA poll.

DOUBLES
Wayne State went ahead right off the bat by grabbing the lone doubles point of the match.

The pairing of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) were the first to finish at the No. 1 doubles spot, winning their match by a 6-2 score. It was the first time this spring that the two played with each other in doubles.

Next, the duo at the No. 2 spot, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) were victorious by the same 6-2 margin over their opponents from UNOH.

Not to be outdone, Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich.) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) were strong at the No. 3 spot, claiming a 6-3 win. For both, it was their first action of the spring season.

SINGLES
The Warriors went ahead and swept all six singles points, keeping a string alive of matches without surrendering any points.

Szpakowska was first to finish at the No. 4 spot, downing her Northwestern Ohio opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Arafat won her singles match at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2.

With the same mark (6-2, 6-2), Gorgidze nabbed the clinching point at the No. 3 spot for the Green and Gold.

After not playing in doubles action, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) was back in her familiar No. 1 singles spot. She did not miss a beat as she topped UNOH's Jelena Lopicic by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

It was nearly a perfect singles match for Weekes, who won 6-1 in the first set before blanking her opponent in the second set, 6-0.

Making it a sweep of the afternoon was Mandair. She won over Neo Mafuyeka 6-3, 6-1 to grab the seventh and final point up for grabs on the day.

FROM THE PLAYERS
"Today was a great day for our team. Down the line, all of our girls played with passion and showed off that Detroit grit. We've shown incredible growth over the last few matches and we can only improve from here," said junior Suki Mandair.
