Charger women's tennis team defeats Davenport 4-0 to win home opener

A strong start in doubles snowballed into an easy victory for the Hillsdale College women's tennis team over visiting Davenport on Sunday.

The Chargers improved to 2-0 on the season, winning every single match that was finished on the court against the Panthers.

Hillsdale swept the doubles matches, led by a 6-2 victory by senior Hannah Cimpeanu and junior Sarah Hackman at No. 1 singles over Sophie Jackson and Willemien Coetzee of Davenport.

Junior Sophia Spinazze and sophomore Canela Luna also rolled at No. 2 doubles, taking a 6-1 victory, and freshman Julia Wagner and sophomore Ellie Chawner didn't drop a single game on the way to a 6-0 win for the Chargers at No. 3 doubles to secure the point.

Hillsdale carried that momentum into a strong performance in singles play as well. Cimpeanu won a tough matchup with Coetzee in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-5, to lead the Chargers, Luna defeated Isabella Carafano 6-2, 6-2 to win at No. 2 singles, and Spinazze topped Jackson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for Hillsdale.

While she was unable to finish her match due to the Chargers clinching on another court, junior Tatum Matthews was headed toward a fifth point for Hillsdale at No. 5 singles, leading Kailyn Skogmo 5-2 in the first set when the match was called.

Hillsdale (2-0) is off to a strong start and will look to maintain its momentum as it faces a step up in competition this coming weekend, traveling to take on Purdue Northwest on the road next Saturday at 4 p.m.
