Concordia cruises to season opening victory

Golden Bears score first eight goals en route to 17-2 win over UCCS

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team opened 2020 with a 17-2 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Thursday evening at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium in Joe Nelson's debut as interim head coach.

Concordia, who scored the first eight goals, will return to the Concordia Dome on Saturday for a noon tilt against Rockhurst (0-1). The Golden Bears are now 3-1 in season openers.

It was a balanced effort as 10 different Golden Bears netted goals and seven different players had at least two points. Junior Katie Moynihan wasted no time for Concordia, scoring 20 seconds into the season on a feed from senior Alina Boyce.

Moynihan had the first two goals of the game, finishing with three while Boyce scored the third goal three minutes into play, her first of three on the night as she led CSP with four points.

Senior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt secured five saves in the net, allowing just two goals in the first 38:45 of play. The five saves put her at 400 in her career while competing in her 50th game. She had a strong start to the second half to bury the Mountain Lions' comeback attempt including a string of three possessions with caused turnovers in the crease. She finished with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers in addition to guarding the goal.

Joining Boyce and Moynihan with multi-goal games scoring two each were Sarah Pierson, Margot Coomes and Mary Keating while Lex Seifert and Sara McNicoll each had a goal and an assist.

Concordia's offense racked up 37 total shots including a 16-2 edge in the second half to keep the pressure on with the lead. Boyce led the team with seven shots (all on goal) while senior Maddie Hentges added seven with five coming on frame.

Pierson also had three ground balls and three draw controls in her CSP debut.

Lexi Stanley led the team on the draw with four while Coomes added two as CSP led 13-7 on the draw.

Ball control was also key as CSP had a 29-23 edge in ground balls, committed nine fewer turnovers with 18 compared to 27 by UCCS and had 18-of-20 clears while shutting down the Mountain Lions to 9-of-22.

CSP's defensive effort included two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover from senior Kylie Christensen while Stanley added a ground ball and caused turnover to go with her four draw controls while seniors Cassidy Leininger and Sara Stickler contributed to the back line that allowed just 10 total shots to the opposition including two in the final 30 minutes.

Claire Hagen played the final 21:15 in goal for CSP, and didn't need to face a shot on goal behind the veteran defense.

UCCS picked up goals from Angela Naughton on an Audrey Napp assist 12 minutes into play to put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard, as well as 26 seconds into the second half with Kiera Lowe finding Madison Ellis to make it 13-2. Napp also had three ground balls and three draw controls.

Madison McGriff took the loss for UCCS, allowing the first six goals with one save in the opening 8-plus minutes before Kennedy Travis finished the game with 13 saves and 11 goals against while securing nine ground balls.
