Woes Continue for Men's Hoops in Indiana

The Warriors return home for two games next week.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (2-11, 1-9 GLIAC) lost its seventh straight at Purdue Northwest (5-13, 2-8 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
A layup by David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) tied the game at 5-5 at the 18:28 mark.  Two points from Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) pushed WSU ahead 9-8 with 16:36 to play before halftime.  Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) got hot and scored 10 consecutive points to give the Green & Gold a 21-13 advantage at the 12:05 mark.  The visitors margin grew to 11 with 8:41 remaining in the half after a layup by Hughes.  Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) slowed a Purdue Northwest rally with a jumper at the the 2:01 mark to make it 39-34.  WSU led 41-37 at the break.

The Pride started the second half fast and led 46-43 following a triple by Logan Phillips at the 17:53 mark.  Neely kept the Warriors close, 48-46, with a bucket but PNW would begin to pull away and led 61-48 with 14:42 left in the contest.  Wayne State was unable to pull within less than 14 over the final 14 minutes of action.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely went 10-of-17 from the floor and finished with 21 points, while dishing out a game-high eight assists.  Williams had 13 points and Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) chipped in 12.  Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) was solid on the glass, grabbing a season-best 13 boards, including eight offensive rebounds.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Five members of Purdue Northwest scored at least 10 points.  Anthony Barnard had 21 points, powered by four three-pointers.  Kai Steinman tallied 20 points, while Caleb Zurliene had 13.  Both Anthony Irvin and Logan Phillips poured in 12 points.

ONE BIG THING
The difference came at the free throw line where WSU went 6-of-16 compared to PNW's 26-of-33 mark.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will return home to host Lake Superior State on Thursday night at 7:30 PM.
