Baseball Swept at Northwood

The Warriors will look to get back on track at home against Findlay next weekend.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (21-18, 13-9 GLIAC) were unable to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of Northwood (21-17, 11-9 GLIAC) on Sunday. The Warriors fell 4-2 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

GAME ONE at NORTHWOOD (L, 2-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Northwood scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, powered by two doubles.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) gave WSU a 2-1 lead with a two-run double in the top of the second inning.  Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (5-4) retired the side in order in the bottom of the third inning.

- Both teams were quiet until the Timberwolves scored three runs on three hits, including a two run double in the bottom of the fifth inning.  The go-ahead run came to the plate in the top of the seventh inning after a walk and a Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) single.  However, NU was able to get the final two outs and earn the victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Loconsole notched a three-hit game and led WSU with two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Kinch pitched all six innings and struck out seven, while allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three walks.

GAME TWO at NORTHWOOD (L, 1-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) singled down the right field in the top of the first inning to give WSU a 1-0 lead.  A solo home run for the T-Wolves tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

- JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) was sharp the rest of the way and did not allow a run until the bottom of the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly broke the 1-1 tie.  Wayne State loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning.  Kelly singled to lead off the frame, Josh Arndt (Sterling Heights. Mich. / Oxford) followed with a one-out single and Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) drew a two-out walk.  However, a pitching change Loconsole grounded out to first to end the threat.

- Conti faced the minimum in the sixth and seventh innings, thanks to a double play to end the seventh inning.  Singles by Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Sherman did not produce any runs in the eighth inning.  Harms, the game-tying run, reached via a one-out walk but  that would as far as the comeback would go.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) went 3-for-4, while Conti and Kelly both collected two hits each.

ON THE MOUND
- Conti lasted five innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and five walks.
- Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) was called on for the final three innings and allowed just two hits and struck out two batters.

UP NEXT
- The Green & Gold will host Findlay for a four-game weekend series beginning on Saturday.
