Seven-Run Inning Leads Baseball to Series Victory

Wayne State took three of four from GVSU to improve to 11-3 in the GLIAC.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (24-9, 11-3 GLIAC) bested No. 25 Grand Valley State (22-12, 5-5 GLIAC) 8-2 on Saturday to win the series three games to one.  A seven-run third inning gave the Warriors the lead and powered WSU to its 10th win in the last 11 games.

It was head coach Ryan Kelley's 400th career victory at Wayne State.  He became the winningest coach in program history in 2017, passing Rodger George and coached his 600th game at Ashland on April 2, 2021.  Kelley's .606 career winning percentage is the highest among coaches in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers scored first with a run on a Nathan Logan double in the top of the first inning.

After a groundout to start the bottom of the third for the Warriors, the next six batters reached via a walk or a hit-by-pitch, allowing Wayne State to take a 4-1 lead.  A failed pickoff attempt allowed two more runs to score and an RBI single by Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) made it 7-1.

CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole second and third base.  A sacrifice fly from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) pushed the Green & Gold advantage to 8-1.

Logan homered to start the top pf the sixth inning but that would be the final tally for either side.

AT THE PLATE
Both Foley and Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) had two hits, while Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) were on base two times.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (5-1) allowed two runs in seven inning son six hits and three walks.  He struck out five batters.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) worked a scoreless eighth inning before Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was perfect in the ninth inning.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will take a break from league play and host Findlay for two games on Tuesday starting at 2:00 p.m.
