Baseball Completes Sweep of Tiffin

The Warriors are 5-0 to begin the 2019 season.

CINICINNATI, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (5-0 overall) finished its series against Tiffin (1-5 overall) on Sunday afternoon and the Warriors completed the sweep with a 9-6 victory over the Dragons.  It is the best start to a season for the program since WSU started the 2014 campaign 8-0.  The three games were played on the campus of the University of Cincinnati at Marge Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors started fast and scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) began the scoring with an RBI groundout and Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) drove in two runs with a triple down to right field line.  Tiffin scored a run in the bottom of the second inning but starting pitcher Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) did well to limit the damage as the Dragons had the bases loaded.

Tiffin added another run in the bottom of the third inning but WSU responded with a run in the top of the fourth, aided by two TU errors.  The lead shrunk to one in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tiffin scored on an RBI triple.  Back-to-back hit batters and a passed ball allowed Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) to plate a run with a sacrifice fly to center field.  Another sac fly, by Iacobelli, gave Wayne State a 6-3 advantage.

Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (1-0) struck out three batters in the bottom of the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep Tiffin off the scoreboard.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) stretched the lead to 7-3 with a sac fly to center.  The Dragons scored three runs on three hits, including a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within a run, 7-6.

Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) swung the momentum back to the WSU dugout in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run single into center field, extending the advantage to 9-6.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) recorded the final seven outs to earn his second save of the year.

AT THE PLATE
Iacobelli paced the offensive attack with three RBI, while MacLean finished with two RBI.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) had a triple, scored two runs and had a triple plus a stolen base.  Also swiping a bag were MacLean and Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline).

ON THE MOUND
Cox allowed two runs in three innings, while walking three and striking out three.  Waldrop recorded a career-best nine strikeouts in three and 2/3 innings, while allowing four runs on five hits and two walks.  Wetmore retired four via the strikeout in two and a 1/3 innings and did not allow a run.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play three games at Missouri-St. Louis on March 2-3.  First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
