Bulldog Softball Wraps Up Season-Opening Tourney With 4-1 Mark After Saturday Split

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team closed out its season-opening action with a split on Saturday (Feb. 20) at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., finishing the event with an impressive 4-1 mark.

The Bulldogs earned a 4-2 win over Findlay in regional play on Saturday morning for their fourth-straight victory to open the year before falling to Illinois-Springfield 6-3 in the finale.

In the opener, Ferris State got hits from outfielder Kylie Winkels along with catcher Ali Magiera and second baseman Jessica Tucci, who had three RBI's. Magiera also drove in a run for the Bulldogs and both Winkels and Tucci notched doubles.

The Bulldogs' Mckenzie Cleland tossed all seven innings for Ferris State, giving up only two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a single walk.

In the second game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Illinois-Springfield scored three times in the bottom of the first and three more in the fifth to account for the margin. FSU managed only a single run in the third the rest of the way.

Outfielder Paige Kortz and shortstop Kodi Ramirez both tallied two hits for the Bulldogs with Kaitlyn Orme, Taylor Buiter and Amara Zukowski all posting a hit each. Buiter had two RBI's and Orme had one for Ferris State.

For Ferris State, Kristie Gray threw five innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Kylie Masko hurled one scoreless inning and gave up only a single hit with a strikeout.

The Bulldogs are slated to return to action Feb. 26-28 at the Blue Bridge Classic in Owensboro, Ky.
