Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill to Take Series

The Warriors won game four of the series to take the series 3-1.

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (3-1) split Sunday's doubleheader to take the series three games to one over Tiffin (3-5) to conclude the season-opening weekend.  The Dragons won game three of the series 5-2, before the Warriors responded with a 7-2 victory in game four.

GAME ONE (L, 2-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dragons struck first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.  The Warriors let the Tiffin starting pitcher do the heavy lifting in the top of the third inning, drawing two bases loaded walks to tie the game 2-2.  However, a leadoff double turned into a sac fly, giving TU a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the third.

The WSU deficit grew to 4-2 after an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth by the Dragons.  A walk and a double in the bottom of the fifth produced another run for Tiffin to make it 5-2.

A double from Kyle Domzalski (Huntington Woods, Mich. / Berkley) started the seventh inning and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) drew a one-out walk.  However, the Dragons were able to pick up back-to-back strikeouts to end the rally and the game.

AT THE PLATE
WSU was held in check with only three hits.  Foley and Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) drew two walks each.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) and struck out four batters in his first action of the season.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) also made his season debut and worked two innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks with one strikeout.

GAME TWO (W, 7-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

A three-run home run in bottom of the first inning from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) put Wayne State up 3-0.  Griffin Stevens answered with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning on a hit-by-pitch, a Finkbeiner single and a walk to Tanderys.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) drove in an important insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Foley drove in a run with a double into left field in the bottom of the sixth inning and Finkbeiner followed with a two-run single to give WSU a 7-2 lead, which would be the final score.

AT THE PLATE
Both Finkbeiner and Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) had two hits, while MacLean drove in three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) collected his first collegiate victory by working five innings, allowing two runs and striking out a pair.  Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) did not allow a baserunner in his inning and a 1/3 of work on the mound.

Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) recorded the final two outs in his first appearance of the season.
