SVSU season ends with loss to Wayne State in GLIAC Tournament

LANSING, Mich. – The 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament continued for Saginaw Valley State University in an elimination game Friday at Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich.

The Cardinals score three times in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, but the Warriors answered with two in the bottom of the inning and scored the game-winning run in the seventh, taking the contest 4-3 and eliminating SVSU.

Wayne State opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first and remained in front 1-0 until the fifth. The Cardinals tied the score with a sacrifice fly RBI from Jaccar Watkins to open the fifth. After SVSU went in front 2-1 on an error by the Warriors, Colin Cornwell extended the Cardinal advantage to 3-1 with an RBI double, scoring Connor McClennen.

Wayne State took advantage of an error by SVSU in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score and the Warriors hit a pair of doubles in the seventh to move in front, holding on for the win.

Kendall Anthes started for the Cardinals, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits, walking three, and striking out three in 4.2 innings. Eric Fritz (2-2) was charged with the loss in relief, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits, and striking out four.

The loss ends the season for the Cardinals with a record of 17-17.
