Baseball Wins Series Finale, Splits Road Trip

The Warriors won game four of the series to split the four-game set.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (15-8, 2-2 GLIAC) and  Davenport (14-17, 4-4 GLIAC) played twice on Sunday.  The Warriors dropped game one 5-4 in extra innings before winning game two 6-1 after WSU scored five runs in the seventh inning.

GAME ONE (L, 4-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers produced a run on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the first inning.  However, WSU left two runner stranded with a strikeout to end the threat.  Davenport took a 3-0 lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.

Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) put the Green & Gold in the run column with an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.

Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) started the fifth inning with a double into the left field corner and Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) followed with an RBI single, trimming the WSU deficit to one, 3-2.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single.

The first two batters reach to begin the bottom of the fifth inning on a single and a walk but a WSU 4-6-3 double play slowed the rally.

Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) walked to lead off the sixth inning before advancing to second on a Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) bunt.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) singled prior to Ramirez gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead on an RBI single through the left side.

DU led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and a throwing error allowed the Panthers to tie the game on an unearned run.  Three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Davenport a walk-off win.

AT THE PLATE
Dale went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Ramirez posted two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) (1-1) worked all seven and 2/3 innings allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out three.

GAME TWO (W, 6-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Both pitchers controlled the early stages of game two until the top of the fifth inning when WSU strung together two hits to take a 1-0 lead.  It started with a double from Miller followed by an RBI single by Dale.

Three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed DU to tie the game at 1-1.  

Miller sent a one-out single through the left side in the top of the seventh inning.  Dale drew a walk and Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled home the go-ahead run.  A fielder's choice RBI from Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) made it 3-1.  Another RBI, this one from MacLean, extended WSU's advantage to 4-1.  The inning produced two more runs as a failed pickoff attempt allowed two more runners to score on the error, giving the Green & Gold a 6-1 lead.

Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (3-1) retired the Panthers in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.

AT THE PLATE
Foley finished 2-for-4 with the key RBI, while Tanderys was 2-for-4 with a runs cored.  Miller also notched a two-hit performance.  Dale, MacLean and DeLanoy all reached base twice and drove in runs.

ON THE MOUND
Korolden struck out four batters over seven innings in his first career complete game.  The right-hander allowed one run on five hits and did not walk anyone.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will host Parkside in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. but will be the visitors on the scoreboard.  Those two games are part of rescheduled series from March 25-27.  Wayne State will conclude the series vs. the Rangers on May 4-5 in Kenosha, Wis.
