Baseball Opens NCAAs With Win Over Quincy

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (35-15) started the NCAA postseason with an 8-6 win over sixth-seeded Quincy (32-19) on Thursday afternoon inside Robin Roberts Stadium.  The Warriors overcame two deficits to move onto Friday's regional semifinal.  The Warriors exacted a bit of revenge as the Hawks ended WSU's season in 2017 in the regional semifinal game after WSU gave up a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning.

It's the eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history and sixth under head coach Ryan Kelly, who is in his 11th season as the WSU skipper.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks scored twice on three hits and a walk in the top of the second inning.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) started the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases.  Foley scored on a double play as QU limited the damage.

The hits kept coming for WSU in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) plated a run with an infield single and Foley gave the Green & Gold a 3-2 lead with an RBI groundout.

A three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning gave Quincy a 5-3 advantage.  Wayne State took an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on five hits, an error and a walk.  MacLean drove in the game-tying runs with a single into left center and Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) gave WSU a 7-5 lead with a two-run single up the middle.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) stole second base and the throw to second base found its way into center field, allowing Kelly to score the eighth run of the afternoon for the home team.

Quincy scored a run on two hits and an error in the top of the seventh inning.  A leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning had QU poised to apply pressure but a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout sealed the win for WSU.

AT THE PLATE
Foley went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while MacLean drove in two with two hits.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) and Jorah also posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and four walks to go with nine strikeouts.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (5-1) was impressive out of the bullpen, working three and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play second-seeded and 16th-ranked Illinois-Springfield on Friday at noon.  The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's regional final.  The Illinois-Springfield (Midwest Regional II) champion will meet the Ashland (Midwest Regional I) champion in the best of three NCAA Midwest Super Regional on May 24-25 with a trip to Division II College World Series on the line.
