Women's Tennis Edged 4-3 by Grand Valley State

The Warriors nearly completed the comeback after dropping the first two points of the match.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (13-3 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) lost its first conference match of the season, as the No. 32-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers (9-5 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) earned a 4-3 win on Saturday at the Premier Athletic & Tennis Club.

DOUBLES
GVSU claimed the doubles point to open the proceedings, moving ahead 1-0 in the all-ranked battle.

The Warriors won the first completed match, as Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) continued their strong play by recording a 6-2 win over Ana Romero Gonzalez and Anna Soteras at the No. 3 doubles spot.

The Lakers duo of Estefania Hernandez and Rachel Sam garnered a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot over Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).

Back together at the No. 1 doubles spot were the 45th-ranked pairing of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland). However, the two lost a close 7-5 match to Vasileia Griva and Taylor Barrett, the No. 14-ranked doubles team in Division II.  This officially gave Grand Valley State the first point.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold put up a fight, but were unable to come away with enough points to win the overall match.

Despite the defeat, the squad saw some strong performances from Arafat, Szpakowska, and Weekes, who all were victorious on Saturday.

Arafat closed the overall deficit to 2-1 after tallying a 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot over Sam, closing the battle with a shut-out after narrowly claiming the opening set.

Continuing to stay undefeated in 16 singles matches on the spring slate was Szpakowska, who handled Hernandez at the No. 5 spot by scores of 7-5, 6-1.

The fifth and sixth flights were a strong spot for WSU over the weekend, as Weekes followed Szpakowska with another victory at the No. 6 spot.  The freshman's match against Amanda Diaz did not factor into which team won the match, but the Warrior emerged with the win in a thrilling and close battle. Diaz won the first set 6-4, with Weekes claiming the second set, 7-5.  In the 10-point tiebreaker, she nabbed the victory by a 10-8 margin.

Barrett defeated Komar in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot, which gave the Lakers their second point.  Griva handled Ruyssen in three sets (7-6 (6), 3-6, 1-6) at the top flight for the third GVSU point

Grand Valley State officially clinched the match with Soteras beating Gorgidze at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3.
