Baseball Unable to Hold On vs. GVSU

The Warriors led 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning but lost 7-4.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (9-5) led Grand Valley State (10-5) early but a four-run seventh inning allowed the Lakers to take the lead and eventually win 7-4.  It was the first of five meetings between the teams this season but this matchup was a non-conference affair.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers scored first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) began the second inning with a single.  After GVSU retired the next two batters, Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) singled home a run to tie the game at 1-1.

The offense paired two extra-base hits in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 advantage.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) doubled into left center before Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) tripled him home on the first pitch he saw.

Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) put the Warriors up 4-1 with a two-run home run to left field in the seventh inning.  GVSU took advantage of two untimely errors in the bottom of the seventh inning to score four runs and take a 5-4 lead.  The Lakers also drew a leadoff walk, had two hits and stole two bases during the rally.

MacLean doubled with one-out in the top of the eighth inning and Tobel drew a two-out walk to put WSU in position to tie the game in the eighth.  Both runners were stranded as pinch-hitter Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) struck out after a six-pitch at-bat.  The momentum stayed with the Lakers as a Kyle Nott double scored two runs, giving GVSU a 7-4 advantage with three outs left to collect.  The Warriors went down in order in the ninth inning.

AT THE PLATE
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. Saline) went 2-for-5, while MacLean had a pair of doubles.  Miller drove int wo runs with seventh inning blast.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) was solid in his six innings of work, allowing two runs and striking out five.  David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) was only able to record one out and allowed two runs before Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) (0-2) was called on to finish the inning, allowing one unearned run.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) allowed a run on two hits in his 2/3 of an inning.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play the first of three games against Southwest Baptist on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
