Baseball Eliminates Walsh, Advances to Championship Sunday

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (37-18) defeated Walsh (31-23) 15-11 to survive and advance to Sunday's championship round.  In the process, the Green & Gold broke the program record for wins (36), which was set in 2014.  Saturday's weather forecast forced the WSU and Illinois-Springfield contest to be postponed until Sunday at 11:00 a.m.  A Warrior win would force a winner-take-all game but a UIS victory would give the Prairie Stars the tournament title.

The Warriors are hosting an NCAA tournament at Harwell Field for the first time in program history.   WSU is playing in the NCAA postseason for the ninth time in program history and seventh under head coach Ryan Kelley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers drew first blood with two runs on a hit and two walks in the top of the first inning.

Wayne State responded in a big way in the bottom of the first with eight runs on seven hits, two walks and a Walsh error.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) reached via an error to start the bottom of the first inning.  The next two batters were retired but a Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) triple to center field put the Warriors on the board.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) tied the game with an RBI single into right field.  Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) gave WSU a lead with a well-placed single into left center field.  Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) sent a single through the right side to make it 4-2.  The home advantage grew to 5-2 on a CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) double down the left field line.  A DeLanoy double pushed the margin to five, 7-2.  A bases-loaded walk to MacLean plated the inning's final run to give WSU an 8-2 lead.

Walsh would not go quietly, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the second inning.  A solo home run from Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) led off the the bottom of the second inning.  Another home run, this one from DeLanoy pushed the lead to 11-4.

Back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth inning brought the Cavs within six, 14-8.

Following singles from MacLean and Ramirez, a single into left field from Dale made it 15-8.

A bases-loaded double from Cameron Kaiser off the wall in the top of the eighth inning cleared the bases and brought the Cavs within four, 15-11.  However, unlike Thursday's matchup with Walsh, Wayne State was able to keep the lead and collect the final three outs for its second straight win in an elimination game.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy had four hits (three extra-base hits) and drove in five runs.  Finkbeiner, Ramirez and Dale all had three hits.  MacLean and Zimmerman turned in two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) allowed eight runs in four innings on five hits and five walks, while striking out three.  Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) (3-0) was the winner out of the bullpen, allowing three runs in four innings and striking out five.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) recorded the final three outs, including a strikeout, while not allowing a base runner.

UP NEXT

Wayne State and Illinois-Springfield will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Harwell Field.  WSU needs to defeat UIS twice to win the tournament.  If needed, game two will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.
